I am looking to move up to a lq trailer.  Now have a F250 heavy duty, v10, with all the add ons for towing.  What is the max trailer weight/size that can be safely pulled with this truck.  don't want to buy more trailer than truck can safely pull and cannot buy both.  need to pull 2 horses all the time and 3 about half of the time.  help

As a first approximation get the rated "Payload" of the truck, it should be in your owner's manual, or you can figure it by subtracting the vehicle's actual weight from it's GVW rating. From this subtract what you will be carrying in the truck. What you have left is what the truck can "carry" as coupler weight. According to how the weight is distributed in the trailer 20 to 25% of it should be on the coupler, so multiplying your allowable coupler weight by 4 or 5 will give you SOME idea of how heavy a trailer you can pull. If this number exceeds the trucks tow rating you have to go with the lower number.

There are several topics on this, please search for and read them. In the case of the F250 it seems that payload is usually the limiting factor.
Booster springs and air bags don't solve this, they just jack up the rear end, it is still overloaded according to the mfg specs.
(paraphrased) Your truck COULD pull more, but it can't CARRY the 20 or 25% of it.

These links should answer all your Ford Truck questions!

Try the 1st link. It will show you all your limits for the truck.

The second link is an awesome forum for Ford Trucks. I have a 01 F250 4x4 SC with the PSD. I have found tons of information from this site on Ford trucks

Depending on you gearing you will probably have 20K total weight (truck and trailer)

Good Luck
