First get the estimated weight of the trailer and all the things you will put in it.Then look for a truck that meets that towing weight.

I have been looking at trailers on this site. But most do not have the estimated weight. I saw a nine horse that said it could be pulled by 1-Ton trucks. I was wondering if anyone out there as experience pulling a trailer that size with a 1-Ton or if I need a bigger truck. I currently have a 1-Ton crew cab dually with a chipped diesel.

It's not a matter of lacking engine horse power, it the brakes and transmission you need to worry about. And your one ton will not fit the need for a 8 or 9 horse trailer. Here we go with guesstimates. 8 horses equals 8000 pounds, 4 saddles is 150, blankets, halters, tack another 150 at least. Hay & feed for ONE day for 8 horses 200 pounds. You gotta have water, so add another 255 for 30 gallons. You know your gonna put down shavings in the stall area so ad another 120 pounds. So far we are up to 8875 pounds before you add the trailer. An all aluminum, with a 4ft shortwall tack room, is going to weigh at minimum 13000 pounds I bet. 8ft x .250 thick aluminum weighs 28.32 pounds per lineal foot, and your going to be at least 30 feet on the floor. So just the skin of the trailer is going to weigh at least 3400 pounds before you add any of the structure. Suffice it to say your going to be pulling a minimum of 18000 pounds even if I'm off by 3000 on the trailer weight.

Thanks. That was more what I was looking for. I was shocked when the ad said pulled by 1ton trucks and thought I would double check. I have been looking at bigger trucks. I just don't know how big I need to go and can't afford to break the bank.
