Help!  99 Ford 7.3 diesel 6 speed.  Clutch catches just right off the floor and is very hard to depress ( strong spring ). Yesterday while picking up hay the clutch started to smoke. We were going in 1st gear and I don't think I was riding the clutch. It didn't feel right even after it cooled off, but today it seems OK. Should I be concerned and have it checked out?

You should have it checked out, sooner rather than later. It is a hydraulic type clutch, so you might check the fluid first.

Typical FORD! All the one I have had 99 up with the 6 speed would do this under heavy load. The only fix I have found is upgrading the clutch and NOT using the factory style dual mass clutch. Something else to check is the firewall around where the clutch and brake is mounted and make sure there is no cracks in the metal. This was a Ford recall in 99 to 2001!
