I have a 2012 2500 Duramax longbed that now has 9,000 miles on it. I am only getting between 14.5 and 16 mpg around town. Mixed FM roads and some in town stop and go. My 2004 Chevy Duramax 1 ton dually would get 17 - 19 mpg under the same conditions, same roads, same trips. Towing a 2 H GN I am getting about 12 - 13 mpg. Is there a trick to getting better milage out of the 2012?  I was getting 13mpg towing the same trailer with the 2004 chevy.

Your 2012 Duramax has stricter emissions systems (DPF, DEF, EGR) that reduce fuel efficiency compared to your 2004 model. To improve mileage, try a high-flow air filter, keep tires properly inflated, use quality diesel, drive conservatively, and avoid excessive idling. A mild economy tune or DPF delete (where legal) can also help.

The newer emissions systems on the 2012 models usually lower MPG compared to older trucks. You can check your tire pressure, keep up with fuel filter changes, and avoid aggressive acceleration. Some owners see small gains with a tuner or deleting emissions equipment, but that’s not legal in all areas.
