I can't find any clear info on the tow capacity of my 96 Ram 2500 HD 12 valve Cummins 5.9L--- except the 8800lb GVW on door tag

I'm looking at a GN horse trailer empty weight 5445lbs 22ft on floor 29 ft total from tail to tongue. It is a 4h slant but I plan to just use it as 2 box stalls.

my usual load going into trailer is 3300lbs

my truck with fuel and usual crap scales 7,000lbs

this would mean with this trailer I would have a trailer and load of 8800 lbs making a combined truck and loaded trailer weight of 15,800 just shy of 16,000

Can I do this or is it not worth it? I have no idea what the GCVW is?

rear axle is 6,000+ lbs and front is 4,000=lbs---don't have exact in front of me

the most i've found was Kelley blue book says "max towing" 13,300.....if that is GCVW it would only give me 6,000...?

Not sure of the numbers, but by what you posted you will be fine. These ol' trucks are work horses. They maybe slow but will out do most of the later models on the road.

The only thing I would do if you are going to tow often is upgrade your exhaust system so you exhaust gas temps stay down and upgrade your air filter. This will help not only for towing but everyday driving and fuel mileage as well.

Hi -Thanks for the input.

I love the old truck---it's such a work horse and get's great mileage!

I was so disgusted when I saw a listed GCVWR of 14K--- that's pretty wimpy and barely covers my towing the horses in a 2h BP w/ DR!

And then you see newer 1/2 tons rated for more than that--or short beds---really frustrating to see vehicles that I personally would not expect to handle a heavy long trailer as well as the old tank of a '96, yet they get rated way higher.

doesn't seem fair!

In my opinion the newer trucks are WAY OVER RATED for what you get..... I would not pull half of what some folks try to pull with them little trucks. (I like my horse much better than that)

I had a 1994 truck like yours that I pulled a 3 car trailer with for 2 years with ZERO problems.
