We have decided to buy a Ford F550 but all of the ones that I have found so far that are reasonably priced are already sold it always seems that I am a day late, lol. What are some good websites to try and find one. I also have our ford dealer looking for me they are only able to come up with standard cab and we want a 4 door, manual. And we are wanting to buy used cause I cant afford the $60,000 new one, lol. I have looked on Truckpaper.com Auto trader auto market Local dealerships in our area Any other good places to look? THANKS!!

I was going to suggest www.Truckpaper.com , but it looks like you've tried that. Would an F-450 work for you? They have the same size brakes as a 550. The main difference is a 13,500# reaer axle on the 550, and an 11,500# rear axle on the 450. The front axles, drive train, and the brake size are the same. Looking for the right used truck can take some time, but if you are not in a big hurry, you should be able to find what you want. The key is talking to a lot of people, and be realistic with what you want and what you are willing to pay. Good luck!

I sold Ford trucks from 1997 until 2003. Because of my involvement with the horse industry, I have continually looked for "the better truck" to haul horses with. I also have made my living in the trucking industry since the early 1970's. I probably have around a million and a half miles of driving tractor trailer combinations, in everything from old unsafe clunkers to brand new state of the art trucks. Safety, reliability, and suitability of purpose are probably three of highest priority items in my opinion when you're looking for a truck. I was putting together some hauler type trucks in the 2000 to 2002 time frame. I opted for the F450 over the F550 at that time because you could get a 4.30, 4.88, or 5.38 rear end ratio in the 450, but only 4.88 and 5.38 in the 550. The lower number, higher ratio will keep your engine revs lower at cruise speed, and that affects your fuel mileage and engine life. I think that since then Ford has changed the options so you can get a 550 with a higher ratio, but you would have to check on that. The rear axle, and rear suspension, was the difference in the two. The 450 had a 15,000 GVW rating, and the 550 had a 17,500 lb and 19,000 lbs GVW rating because of that.
I know it can be a little confusing, and that's why some people have a less than satisfactory experience trying to get the right truck for their use.
