Currently I have a 1999 GMC Sierra extended cab, V-8, 5.3 engine with heavy duty towing package, 4x4.

I would like to get a Sundowner BP 2 horse slant. But this would be for towing my 13.1 hand POA to local shows and events.

Everyone says they wouldn't tow with anything less than a 3/4 ton, on other message boards I've checked.

Hubby wants me to get a Dually and GN trailer. But it would never fit into our budget for at least a couple years.

Any opinions would be very appreciated.

Thanks

Check your trailers weight and trucks owners manuel to see what it is rated to pull.  Just make sure that the trailer+ load aren't over your trucks limits.  Heavier trailers require heavier trucks and some people firmly believe that bigger is better even if you just towing a lawn mower trailer.

"everyone" rarely knows what they are talking about. as i have said/will contiue to say ANY 1/2 ton with a v8 will easily handle any 2h trailer out there. didnt think they had a 5.0 in 1999? 4.8 and 5.3 i believe were the choices, either would do........the 5.3 would do better. get a brake controller, and a wdh if it appears necessary, and let it ride.
a dually and gn for local shows is EXTREME overkill, and would be no safer, but dont let anyone tell you how to spend your money.

Chadsalt, I stand corrected. You are right. Just called hubby and it is a 5.3

Thanks for the info.  :)

This works, but the newer trucks with their higher ratings would be even better.

Thats a nice set up Rik. Thanks for posting. What kind of Sundowner is that?

My mind is pretty much made up about the Sundowner. I like the Stampede SL.

 I see your from MA.

Did you get it at Orchard Trailers?

I have lots of customers that haul that trailer with that truck (Or even lighter weight ones).  Call me for details.

The trailer is a 777 2-horse straight load w/dressing room. I'm the horse husband, but my wife's 17.1 thoroughbred eventing horse fits just fine. We did get it at Orchard when we were living in northeast CT, but as you see, we've moved to MA.

I agree.  I have a half ton Dodge extended cab and it will pull my 2 hr. bumper pull, loaded, any speed I want to go.
