I am just about outdone with my Chevey dually. For the 3rd time in 7 months, I have been pulling our horse trailer away from home & had the 'clean exhaust filter' warning come on. Each time I have checked with OnStar to verify I could continue driving. This time, for the 1st time, they said take to the dealership asap. I also had lost significant power. OnStar said to unhook and run at highway speed for 30 minutes to allow the stuff to burn off- but I couldn't get it past 30 mph. So... finally had to get a tow-truck take it to the nearest dealer (tomorrow) and bum a ride home.
So- where is this filter? What the heck is the deal with this? The last 2 times they just reset the computer or replaced a sensor (1st time and 2nd time).... ARRGGGHHH!

You can thank our friendly EPA folks for your diesel particulate filter, and the problems associated with it. As of Jan 1, 2007 deisel engines sold for use in on highway vehicles had to meet much more stringent anti-pollution standards. In order to meet the new requirements, most if not all the diesel engine manufacturers had to use the particulate filters. The particulate filters are made of a ceramic type material that filters out the particulate material. It is supposed to run hot enough to burn the particulate material reducing it even further to a very fine ash. When it doesn't run hot enough during normal operation, such as stop and go driving, you have to stop so it can go through it's regeneration, or cleaning cycle. That is also the reason we now have to use ultra low sulpher diesel fuel. I think we are going to be learning the ins and outs of dealing with this technology over the next two or three years.
