I just had an employee tell me that they hauled the work truck (08 F350, 42,000 miles) to the dealer who says we must have got some contaminated fuel and the whole fuel system needs replaced to the tune of $10,000. The truck was running fine for several hours after the fuel up, then just stopped and would crank, but not start. The employee has also got diesel from the same place in his personal truck with no problem. I'm far away and not very mechanical. Does this sound right?

My first thought is someone put gasoline in it and ran it. I guess that is a contaminant, but when someone says "contaminated fuel", I think of water first. Water can cause you some problems, but normally if you have a bunch of water, it won't run very long or very far. If I were in your place, I'd probably want to talk directly with the tech that diagnosed your truck, and see exactly what he found, and have him explain what he wants to replace and why. I like talking to the person who's working on it- less chance of miscommunication that way.

I am with Paul, for that kind of serious dough, I'd pull a sample from the water separator, and have it tested or at least smell it, and let it sit and see if I have a water problem. Just my 2C's I know.....Steve
