Have 2002 F250 7.3 Powerstoke diesel --oil pan leaking again. In Sept. 2009, noticed oil leak, trk has 38,817 miles (don't drive except to pull trailer). Took to Ford Dealer they advd the oil pan did not have a gasket that it is sealed on with silicone. They also said rear main was leaking. Said they had to drop the engine to repair the oil pan leak (actually reseal it with silicone) total bill $3,190.00 for repairs.
Fast forward to Nov 2010 - noticed oil pan is leaking again. Crawled under truck and where the leak is looks like the sealant has a bubble pouching out.
I have 2 questions. Does this oil pan have a gasket? Could being parked in an air conditioned garage affect the silicone sealant?

First, I do not think the 7.3's have gaskets, and the garage will not affect it either. If this was the case your rear end wold be leaking too (your trucks rer end) sorry.
Did they check the sensor on top of the engine by the turbo? 99% of the time when you see oil leaking from a 7.3 diesel the sensor on top is the problem. But when taken to a dealer they will tell you oil pan or rear seal because they make BIG bucks on replacing this and most of the time they will clean off the localtion and put more sealant on top of the old but still charge for the work.
I will check and post the actual name of the senor I am talking about or you can go to www.powerstroke.org and look in the section for 99 to 03 powerstroke diesels. I have had 300-mile truck with no oil pan issues so I find it hard to believe that a 30-k mile truck cold have this problem.

Sorry so late to reply, been out.
The part is either called an ICP or IPC???? Injector pressure control switch or sensor, or injector cntrol pressure sensor. This sensor will start leaking oil out of the end that the wires plug into the end of it and if bad enough could start having poor running issues, but will cause bad oil leaks....

No gasket on oil pan, bad design on navistars part. I have seen alot of trucks with oil pan leaks because of this. Even when pan is pulled and resealed problems can occur, in your case of a bubble likely because they didnt flatten the pan back out flush for a good seal, too much silicon, or a weak spot in fresh seal and oil filled back into pan pushes silicone out because of not enough time to cure.
Its a fairly simple job just time consuming. Sloppy work leads to problems like leaking again, if your not careful when doing the job, making sure all oil residue was cleaned off and the face of your pan was flat. All while making sure youve put enough silicone in without over doing it.
along with pan leaking, check the external oil cooler tube, 2 o-rings in each end on some of these 7.3's or 444e, will leak when first cranking up for a about 10 seconds, then stop once oil has begun to flow. which may appear to be oil pan, but is really oil cooler.
Wash engine and oil pan well (something fairly easy, and cheap), and check before changing or ordering sensors, Personally never had much trouble with turbo or sensor leaking oil, only once a turbo, so I wouldnt bank much on that end of things.

Never seen any oil cooler problems on 7.3's EVER! Only been working on them as well as buying and selling them since they came out in 94.5!
The major issue with them is the ICP leaking and running thru the engine valley then down the side of the engine. Just so happens I bought one on Friday with this problem. Just first look under the truck t sure looked to be oil pan and the man I bought the truck from said the Ford dealer just told him the oil pan was leaking and would cost big bucks to fix. Lucky me a $150. part and 15 mins to change it and washing the engine fixed the oil leak......

Out of 5- f550 and 2-f450 all with 7.3 powerstroke and 2- international 4700 with the 444e that have been used for my business normally thats where my oil leaks have come from out of 9 trucks 4 have had oil leaks from these areas , never from internal or icp sensors. Was only a suggestion to check, does not make me an authority on the subject. Just experience. Sounded like you got in tizzy over my 2 cent opinion, bosshogg.

No tizzy here just stating facts! FYI it is hogtownboss, so please use the correct name when you post a reply. That is childish actions. Did not mean to hurt you little feelings when replying with the facts.
Sounds like you are prone to trouble following you if you claim to have that many Powerstrokes when oil pan issues. Out of the hundreds I have bought, sold and worked on I have never had 1 oil pan leak at all! I even checked the 4 I have right now 1-95 with 361-k miles, 1-96 with 260-k miles, 1-01 with 278-k miles and 1-03 with 78-k miles. 2 of them had minor oil leaks and both was ICP (the 95 and 03).
