Hi all, I've been searching for an inexpensive used truck to pull a two-horse gooseneck w/dressing room (Merhow, alum.over steel). I have found a 1994 F250, 7.3 Turbo diesel, 4x4, 166K miles, with goosneck hitch (asking $5K). Assuming its in good condition, it sounds like the truck has everything I need, and more than enough engine for a 2horse trailer. Does anyone have any Pros/Cons about the 7.3 turbo diesel engine? Or Diesel vs. gas? Mileage? Any things I should be looking out for? Thanks in advance for your help. I'm a newbie truck buyer...I appreciate your thoughts. Best, FoxesRCool

The 7.3 liter engine has proven to be a good reliable engine.  Before buying it I would suggest taking whatever truck you are considering to a good diesel mechanic.  Good luck with the truck and let us know what you end up getting. :)

Make sure ya know which engine you are getting, all 3 diesels were an option in 94.  The 7.3L IDI NA , 7.3L IDI with turbo, and the 7.3L Direct Injection (PSD).  It was the first yr. for the PSD, they had a few problems and parts will be more expensive than with the other two engines.  Like you said, any of the 3 will have plenty of power for the wagon that you're pullin'.  Good luck, have fun lookin', and I'll talk to y'all later...

Agree with other posts here.  I had a 7.3L indirect injection diesel in my '91 F-350.  It was anemic pulling my current trailer (listed below), even with an aftermarket turbo.  Know which engine you're getting, and have it checked.  The first-year Power Strokes didn't have much more power than the IDI I had... but a 2-horse oughta be fine...

Have the transmission checked out.  When mine went out a year after buying my '91 (used), it cost me an arm and a leg to get a good rebuild.

For $5k, it is a relatively inexpensive way to get the freedom to take your horses here and there.  Hope it checks out and you have a new (to you) truck to enjoy.

Mike
